Porn and Female Sex Addicts

The role of pornography for some women sex addicts can be a major source of acting out, although this probably does not represent the majority of them.  As one woman in a recovery meeting said “Who needs pornography? I can go to any bar, mall, or grocery store and pick someone up and have the real thing.” Other women nodded in agreement to this statement.

In our study of women, the use of porn varied. Forty-six percent stated that they use pornography sometimes. Twenty-nine percent stated that they do not use porn.  Twenty-one percent stated that they used porn regularly and 4% stated they used pornography rarely in their sex addiction.  The internet has made pornography even more available, now it’s even on your cell phone.

The types of pornography that women used appears to transcend our stereotypical Playgirl-type magazines. Our study found that 37.5% preferred heterosexual type pornography, 46% preferred pornography of other women, and only 16.5% preferred all male (Playgirl-type) pornography while in their addiction.

Women sex addicts who use pornography can be just as addicted to that form of acting out as any other sexual behavior. Their stories alone tell us this. A woman trapped in self sex and pornography can have just as much shame and guilt as those who act out with others. She has the same negative effects on her self esteem, spiritual life, and her other relationships. She will have the same process of recovery as she heals from the secret of pornography as the other secrets women will share about in the following chapters.

As you choose a path to recovery I strongly suggest not only a porn blocker for your computer but also your cell phone.  The porn blocker stops the images from coming on your screen.  The accountability software sends a report to those you might be accountable to so you can be honest.  These are both available on our website so you don’t have to continue to have a secret at what you might be looking at.  You are worth protecting your eyes because seeing activates your addiction to do those things you see.  You can be free to not be a sex object to yourself or others.
